I KNEW YOU WERE TROUBLE
Oxford Series #4

Releasing June 13, 2017
Loveswept

New York City’s hottest bachelors are stirring up trouble in this fun, flirty Oxford Novel, as a love triangle forces a feisty beauty to choose between winning back Mr. Right or giving in to Mr. Wrong.

Taylor Carr has it all—a sleek job in advertising, a stunning Manhattan apartment, and the perfect man to share it with: Bradley Calloway. Even after Bradley dumps her for a co-worker on move-in day, Taylor isn’t worried. She’ll get her man eventually. In the meantime, she needs a new roommate. Enter Nick Ballantine, career bartender, freelance writer—and longtime pain in Taylor’s ass. Sexy in a permanent five-o’clock-shadow kind of way, Nick knows how to push Taylor’s buttons, as if he could see right through to the real her.

Nick’s always trying to fix people, and nobody could use a good fixing more than Taylor. Sure, she’s gorgeous, with mesmerizing silver eyes, but it’s her vulnerability that kills him. Now that they’re shacking up together, the chemistry is out of control. Soon they’re putting every part of their two-bedroom apartment to good use. Then Taylor’s ex comes crawling back to her, and Nick figures she’ll jump at the chance to go back to her old life—unless he fights for the best thing that ever happened to him.

I loved this book!!! It was so much fun to see the other part of the Oxford office and get some cameos by some of my favorite Oxford boys. I loved getting more of Nick after meeting him in Someone Like You I was eager for his story and the love/hate bickering dynamic he had with Taylor was perfection. These two were combustible in every way, but were big teddy bears underneath. It was such a fun book to read and I couldn’t have asked for more. As I say with every new Lauren Layne this is my new favorite and I highly recommend.

One thing leads to another and now I’m in too deep.

I can’t let her know what I am, but I’ve never wanted a woman the way I want her.

However, harboring secrets comes at a price and I have a feeling she’s keeping some of her own. Especially, when my next mission leads me straight to her. Turns out she’s not who I thought she was.

Standing at the receptionist’s desk, I waited to hear the verdict. Would Wade see me or not? When I heard his answer, I breathed a sigh of relief. I didn’t want my stupidity to ruin my shop’s chances at success. The receptionist smiled up at me. “You can go back now, Ms. Carmichael. His office is the last one on the right.”

“Thank you,” I replied with a smile of my own.

Pulse pounding in my ears, I walked down the hall to Wade’s office. I had a folder of my designs tucked under my arm. Hopefully, it’d be enough to persuade him. Taking a deep breath, I knocked on his door.

“Come in,” he called out, his voice making me shiver.

I hated how this man made me feel like that. It’d been over a week and I could still feel the way he touched every square inch of my body. I wasn’t a needy woman, but he made me want more. This is business, nothing more.

Head held high, I opened the door. Wade was at his desk, leaning back in his chair, all cool and confident, dressed in his expensive suit with his brown hair perfectly coifed. Definitely not a bundle of nerves, like I was. “Mr. Chandler, it’s good to see you again.”

His brows lifted. “Likewise. Although I’d probably believe it more if you hadn’t run out on me the last time.”

And there it was.

Biting my lip, I shut the door. I couldn’t tell if he was angry, or didn’t care. “Thought I’d save you the trouble,” I confessed. “We both had a little too much to drink that night. And let’s face it, it was either going to be me or you. And I prefer not to be the one left behind.”

“Neither do I,” he said in all seriousness. “So, what brings you here?”

This one was full of suspense, steamy sexy times, action and fun. I really enjoy this series and the twists and turns that each of these books take. This one was no exception.I loved Wade and Brina and their romance along with the suspense draws you in from the beginning and doesn’t let go until the very end. I highly recommend this series.

About MORE THAN A FEELING:

From the award-winning author of TAKE ME HOME TONIGHT comes the final story in her red-hot Rock Star Romance series, about a loner rocker finding his perfect duet.

When Cooper Hood left Snowberry, Montana ten years ago, he swore he’d never go back to the town that painted him with the same brush as his addict mother. But right in the middle of his band’s national tour he gets a call to come home: his mom’s got a whopper of a secret to reveal.

Daisy Charbonneau’s in trouble. The talent she hired for her resort’s annual Huckleberry Festival just bailed on her, and she’s desperate to find a replacement act. Luck turns her way when she discovers her high school crush is back in town—and he happens to be a rock star.

As they work together, a crush deepens into so much more, but who falls in love in two weeks?

Especially when Cooper’s never coming back to town, and Daisy’s never going to leave it.

Closing her eyes, Daisy bit into the crunchy drizzle, her teeth sinking through the buttery rich goodness of the bread. Oh, dear God. Her mom made the world’s best cinnamon rolls. With a sigh, she looked up to find someone heading toward her on the path.

Of course her childhood crush would show up the moment she’d stuffed her mouth full of pastry. Leaning against the hood of her car, Daisy chewed quickly—which sucked because, basically, time should stand still while savoring her mom’s desserts.

But Cooper wasn’t looking at her. Scowling at his phone, he stopped on the path, fingers furiously typing. Was he dealing with his mom?

Or maybe a girlfriend. Instantly her skin tightened, and her heart thudded. If Cooper had a girlfriend…God. Last night she’d gone on and on about how much he’d meant to her.

She looked away, mortification crashing through her system.

First, she’d bumped into him wearing waders and a fishing hat, and then she’d forced him to go out with her. Awesome.

He couldn’t have been clearer that he didn’t want to spend the day with her, but she’d gone and made an offer she knew he couldn’t turn down. Not if he wanted to get his mom’s house built and get himself back on tour.

Feeling a little sick to her stomach, she licked the sticky drizzle off her fingers and shoved the treat back into the bag.

As he paused on the path, thumbs working over the phone’s keypad, she took in his powerful physique. A white T-shirt strained across broad shoulders, hugging his thickly rounded biceps, and worn blue jeans cupped his hard, muscular thighs.

The colorful ink covering his body made him look like a total badass. She’d noticed a strange symbol on his inner wrist and a cartoon image on his forearm of a pin-up girl holding a barbell, a sexy slash of red for her lips.

The man he’d grown into made her soul wake up, and God, she couldn’t even remember the last time she’d felt this kind of fluttery attraction for a guy.

As if he felt someone watching him, he looked up sharply and found her. The worry lines eased. But he didn’t smile. “Hey.”

She pushed off her car. “You ready?” Forced or not, her plan was good for both of them. She was sticking to it.

We finally get Cooper’s, the last bachelor of Blue Fire, story. He has to go back to his home town to help his mom on the band’s tour break and he gets more than he bargained for. He reunites with his best friend from High School Daisy and this is the story of how they become more than friends.

Cooper couldn’t get out of this town fast enough, while Daisy never wants to leave. Each has things they need to overcome in order to make this work, and the story handles these issues beautifully. I recommend this book to anyone that like their rockers with a side of broken little boy and a big helping of small town charm.

This book was like a trainwreck… you shouldn’t be watching, but you can’t look away. I mean that in the best way though. It was so good I could not put it down, but so hard to read at times I cringed and laughed nervously. This is the type of book you read and make sure no one is around to read over your shoulder. It is so amazing that K. Webster can take a character I wanted to die a slow and painful death in the last book and make you fall for them. I highly recommend this book and this entire series. It may be hard to read, but it is so worth it in the end.

Excerpt

Squeeeeeak!

The door protests when I open it and it’s loud.  There’s no turning back now.  I have to go.

I push through it and stride down the steps.  The memory of a few months before—him chasing me through the woods—is at the forefront in my mind.  If anything, it only spurs me to go faster.  With long strides, I ignore the bite of the gravel driveway on my bare feet as I put as much distance as I can between me and that godforsaken cabin.

“Goddammit, Baylee!”

His furious words from behind me make my heart freeze and I almost stumble.  Ignoring the hateful way his words echo in my head, I run faster than I ever have toward the road.  Heavy footsteps and frustrated grunts can be heard behind me.  My panic overwhelms me with fear and tears well in my eyes, blurring the world around me.  When my bare feet make purchase with the smooth, chilly concrete of the road, I almost cry out with joy.  Running becomes a thousand times easier and I soar with long strides.

I focus on the road ahead of me and the prize is my ultimate escape.

I don’t count my steps.  I don’t worry about his punishments.

Gabe will not catch me this time.

The grumble of an engine just around the bend is just the spark I need.  My long legs carry me farther and faster than ever before.  I risk a glance behind me and nearly cry out.

A monster chases me.

Bare feet and bare chested, only jeans covering his long, powerful legs.

Dark hair flapping in the wind.

Eyes black with rage.

Muscled chest flexing with the promise of recapture and retribution for my actions.

His mouth is contorted into a horrifying snarl, and I wonder if he’ll tear through my flesh upon catching me.

He will not catch me this time.

Jerking my head forward, I pound along the freezing pavement toward the vehicle that now comes into view.

Thank you, God!

The black truck is barreling down the road.  Too fast.  Too out of control.  It’ll hit me, I think.

The threat of tears burn in my throat as the sound of screeching tires echoes around me.  The truck never makes impact, though, and instead slams to a complete stop.  A door flings open and I charge toward it.

“H-Help!” I croak, my voice dry and hoarse from exertion.

A man steps out and looks past me.  “Get in the truck!”

The voice is comforting and familiar.  I don’t think twice about running past him and crawling into the cab of the truck.  When I lift my gaze out of the windshield, I see just how close Gabe is.  But instead of running right for us, he veers off to the tree line and reemerges with a large, thick branch.

“Let her go and I won’t crack your skull open,” Gabe barks out at the man whose face is hidden from me.

I could slam the door shut and drive off.  Leave the man to deal with the monster on his own.  The thought is fleeting and I don’t let it win.  If I left the man, Gabe would slaughter him.  It would be that man’s death sentence.

“She’s coming with me, Gabe.”

The voice.  Familiar.  Warm.  Easy.  And how does he know his name?

Before I can contemplate much more, a gunshot goes off, shattering the early morning tranquility.  Gabe’s shoulder jerks back and he gapes at the man in shock.  He doesn’t take another second before turning and hauling ass back to the cabin. Another gunshot goes off but it misses Gabe’s retreating form.

“Baylee,” the voice whispers.  “Jesus, my Baylee.”

The man steps into the open doorway of the truck and dips his head down to look at me.  Pained, green eyes assess me.  I’m so shocked, I simply stare at him with my mouth agape as he shoves the gun into the back of his pants.

“B-B-Brandon?”

I just finished this book and I have no words. Of all the things I could imagine would happen in this book, somehow K. Webster was able make the perfect ending I didn’t know I needed.
Every word, every feeling, every second of this book was everything.
The amazing story weaving between War and Peace was enough to shatter your heart, but was also so powerful and all-encompassing that it put you back together again, piece by piece, word by word. I loved every second of this journey and highly recommend picking up this series if you want something that has a dark side, but also has enough light to lead you through.

SYNOPSIS:

God help the woman I take home tonight.

Band manager James Brandon never expected to find the elusive satisfaction he’d been chasing, let alone stumble upon it in some sleezy Hollywood meat market. Yet the girl’s quiet pride spoke to him from across the bar, louder than a shout. Troubled, hungry and homeless, she’d placed her trust in him. But after losing the grip on his dark desires that one fateful night, James has spent the last four years atoning for letting her down.

This time I’ll finally crack him.

Rock band drummer Lita Regina has had enough of James’s guilt. She wants the explosive man she met that night in Hollywood. The man who held nothing back and took no prisoners—save Lita. And she’ll stop at nothing to revive him. Even if it means throwing herself into peril at every turn, just to get a reaction from her stoic manager. But when Lita takes her quest one step too far, James disappears from her life, thinking his absence will keep her safe.

Now it’s up to Lita to bring James back…and ignite an inferno of passion in the process.

Reader Advisory: ROUGH RHYTHM contains fantasies of nonconsensual sex, acted upon by consenting characters. Readers with sensitivity to portrayals of nonconsensual sex should be advised.

1001_2016_Tessa Bailey_300dpiExcerpt

“Oh, goddamn you.” Lita plucked the card from his fingers and hurled it back into the hallway with a muffled scream. “Four years leads to this, huh? You’re just going to dump me in this fucking…”—she waved her hands to encompass the hotel—“…rock star purgatory and bail? If you’re doing this to teach me a lesson, I will never forgive you, James.”

“I’m not.” He cleared the cobwebs from his throat. “That’s not what this is.”

Without looking at Lita, he knew she’d be chewing her bottom lip, leaving teeth marks that would take until nighttime to fade. “I guess we really meant a lot to you if it’s this easy. No notice. Just…peace out, suckers.”

James swallowed the urge to shake her. “I think you know this is the furthest thing from easy.”

“No. I don’t know anything,” she shouted, before several silent beats passed. “Except that you’re a coward. You can’t even look me in the eye.”

He surged forward, pushing her back against the doorjamb. Going to break. Too much. I shouldn’t have come up here. He’d made the mistake of looking down into green eyes swimming with moisture, calling her bluff. “Does the thought of you hurting yourself to get my attention make me a coward? Yes? So be it, Lita.” His fingernails dug into the flesh of his palms. “If something happened to you, I wouldn’t make it to the next sunrise.”

Lita’s body deflated, head falling back. “You can’t say something like that and leave,” she said, lips hardly moving. “It’s cruel.”

“I’m a cruel man.”

“No.” Lita moved into the elegant room, booted feet dragging. A miniature hurricane in a gilded cage. He’d chosen the room himself, another sign of his madness, his need to control her surroundings. Have knowledge of everything she touched. His neck grew hot when she turned, sliding a gaze down his front.

Turning and leaving was imperative at that moment, but he couldn’t resist hearing what she would say next. Delaying the good-bye.

“Remember what you called me the first night we met?” She sat down on the edge of the bed. “Before you leave, call me that one more time.”

“No.”

Review

4 StarsLita and James were fascinating in the first books, so when I found out they were going to get their own novella I was ecstatic. I was not disappointed. These two were fantastic.

My Thoughts

James and Lita have been going round and round since the day they met. He cares for her deeply but holds her at an arms distance. She is a firecracker that tries everything to get him to crack and pull her closer. The push/pull we saw in Crashed Out was more than enough to draw me to this novella, add a touch of darkness and Tessa Bailey and I was all over it.

James is constantly trying to protect Lita from everyone and everything including himself. He has a darkness inside him (which really just means he likes it rough) and was terrified to hurt Lita and she would leave him. He was justified in this because of his past, but he thought he was some big bad monster through most of the book, and that was the furthest thing from the truth. He saw Lita as fragile and delicate and it was so frustrating for Lita and even more for the reader.

Lita was a wild, crazy, fun, strong, amazing female character. I loved reading her. She did all kinds of insane, fun things to get James’ attention, to get him to see her. They both wanted the other so bad they went to extremes to (on his part) push and (on her part) pull at each other. James finally has enough and quits the band manager position leaving Lita alone. She takes a stand and tracks him down to force him to face her and his feelings. These were some of my favorite parts of the book. The fighting and banter between these two was off the charts sexy.

Overall this book had a medium sized helping of drama, a heavy dose of steaminess, awesome characters, and a beautifully heartbreaking love story with a fantastic ending. I loved these two. This book was everything I was hoping it would be and more. Lita was a smart, strong, bad-ass woman and James was her protector, even when he was the one hurting her. I cannot wait to read this again to experience their chemistry and beautiful story over and over again.

ABOUT TESSA BAILEY

10929005_328734870648822_8403984229136741124_nTessa Bailey is originally from Carlsbad, California. The day after high school graduation, she packed her yearbook, ripped jeans and laptop, driving cross-country to New York City in under four days. Her most valuable life experiences were learned thereafter while waitressing at K-Dees, a Manhattan pub owned by her uncle. Inside those four walls, she met her husband, best friend and discovered the magic of classic rock, managing to put herself through Kingsborough Community College and the English program at Pace University at the same time. Several stunted attempts to enter the work force as a journalist followed, but romance writing continued to demand her attention. She now lives in Long Island, New York with her husband of eight years and four-year-old daughter. Although she is severely sleep-deprived, she is incredibly happy to be living her dream of writing about people falling in love.
