But if I can’t get him to take academics seriously, I’ll lose my scholarship…if I don’t lose my heart first.

Six unlikely friends on a nine-month cruise with the Study at Sea program will learn that chemistry is more than a subject and the best lessons aren’t taught in the classroom…but in the heart.

4 Stars

This was such a fun ride. I had no idea what I was getting into when I started reading this book, but I loved the story, the characters and the writing style. It all hooked me and I could not put it down. I really enjoyed this book and I cannot wait for the next book, Nova.

Best Friends With Benefits by Candy Sloane – Review

Best Friends With Benefits

Valerie Barkin and Alec Rogers survived bullies, awful parents, and seriously shitty social standing the only way best friends can—together. But with the unexpected sexual tension suddenly flaring between them, surviving their ten-year high school reunion might be a different story…

Val hasn’t changed. She still feels like the stringy-haired band geek the popular kids teased, but Alec has definitely changed. He’s now the front man for the Grammy-winning rock band Chronic Disharmony, with the sexual reputation to match. And he’s more than willing to help Val rock the reunion.

And then it happens—a drunken game of Seven Minutes in Heaven—and their fourteen-years-long foreplay comes crashing to the forefront…changing everything.

Seven minutes turns into a weekend of mind-blowing, no-strings-attached sex. But these best friends won’t be able to leave their hearts out of it forever, not when the most meaningful benefit could change their relationship for good….

3.5 Stars

Best Friends With Benefits is a friends to lovers story set during their 10 year high school reunion. This story had one of my favorite premises unpopular kids who make something of themselves, and then attend their class reunion only to find boring, jealous former bullies. Toss in an unexpected hookup and it seems like the perfect story for me. Unfortunately this one just fell a little short for me.

Val and Alex were nerd kids in high school, but had both made a name for themselves in music. He is a famous rock star and she is playing for a major symphony. They were best friends in high school, but he always wanted more and she was too insecure to realize it. The kept in touch through texts, Skype and phone calls, but haven’t seen each other in 10 years. It was a little unlikely that they could/would remain best friends but couldn’t take any time out to visit the other. And then bam they meet for the reunion and sparks fly…

I couldn’t connect with either Val or Alex for some reason. The plot had so much potential and the reunion parts were fun, but there was so little interaction with classmates and the actual events that it left me wanting more. I was also frustrated by their serious and constant lack of communication and the arbitrary rules they each proposed that were pretty much immediately discarded. Overall it was a fun sexy story that I would recommend for anyone wanting a quick and dirty friends to lovers story.

Notable Quotes

“I can teach you my ways.” He lifted his brows up and down comically. “The best way to get over a breakup is to fuck someone new.”

“Thanks, Confucius.”

“That’s Cock-fucius,” he tossed back with a wicked grin.

She shook her head. “I can only imagine what your fortune cookies might say.”

“I know you’ve been fantasizing about me fucking you since last night. Do you really want to wait any longer?”

It came out bolder than he’d intended. Maybe he’d gone too far.

He shouldn’t want this. She was his best friend. But he couldn’t stop.

This was not going to be a wham bam thank you sir. Oh no, she was going to have to deal with wanting him so badly she forgot her name.
