Last Call by Staci Hart

Once Rose Fisher makes a decision, that’s it. End of story.
Like when her ex, Patrick, dumped her out of the blue, then showed up with a super hot, tatted up sex kitten on his arm. Then it was over for good. The end. Poof. Dead to her. Except he was everywhere — down the hall, at the bar with their friends, worming his way into her dreams.
But with their friends paired off, they’re left alone more and more. Rose is determined to keep him friendzoned — doesn’t matter that he stares at her with a smolder that drops all panties in a ten foot radius. She’s over him, and she’ll prove it by getting back into the dating game, Patrick be damned.
Patrick Evans is no stranger to consequences. When your mother walks out, your dad drifts away. When you leave home, you’re on your own. And when you run away from the girl you love, you lose her. He finally has an opportunity to rebuild the bridge he burned, and it’s not one he’ll take for granted. But he’ll have to fight for her, even if it hurts. Even if it means he’ll walk away brokenhearted. Because deep down, he knows that she’s it for him.
The trick will be to get her to admit she feels it too.

Some Sort of Love by Melanie Harlow

From the outside looking in, I had it all—a career I loved, a supportive family, the Nixon metabolism but not the Nixon ears, and a salary that supported my lavish taste in designer shoes, fine wine, and lacy lingerie … but I had no one to share it with.
Until the day I ran into him—my one night stand from college with the crooked smile, let’s-get-out-of-here eyes, and dirty, dirty mouth.
Cute and cocky then, today Levi Brooks is six feet four inches of hot bearded fantasy. A sexy single dad with broad shoulders, strong hands, and a fantastically big … heart. (I mean, it’s massive. And generous. And it pumps so hard … um. Sorry. Lost my place.)
Being a good father means everything to him, but he’s keeping me at a distance because he thinks I deserve someone better — a man who can give me more time, more attention, more of him elf. He doesn’t believe he could ever be enough.
But he’s wrong.
He’s everything.

Hooker by Brooke Blaine

Whoever said singles were missing out by not finding true love and getting married before the age of thirty had never experienced the sheer pleasure of nightly romantic comedy viewings in their underwear while eating one of Licked’s famous Crazy Cat Lady sundaes. Because life just doesn’t get better than that.
At least, it doesn’t for Shayne Callahan. It didn’t take more than a handful of broken hearts after college to solidify that she was better at pairing up those around her than herself. As a matchmaker at the elite HLS—Hook, Line, & Sinker Matchmaking Company—in the City of Angels, she has a knack for finding the other halves of even the most eccentric clients:
Sugar daddy with a foot fetish? Gross, but no problem.
A severe case of nudophobia? Match made before lunch.
But even the most happily independent of women can find their best-laid plans screeching to a halt when they meet that guy. For Shayne, that guy comes in the form of boyishly handsome, suspender-lovin’, dimple-poppin’ Nate Ryan on a pantsless (we’ll get to that later) Metro ride.
Of course, relationships can never be easy. Before the destined lovers can ride off into the sunset, they must overcome a power-hungry and sexual-punning boss, a celebrity scandal and cover-up, and let’s not forget Shayne’s dreadful foot-in-mouth disease—with which there can never be a happily ever after.
Will fate throw Shayne a freakin’ bone? Or will she be destined to live out her life as sexy(ish), single(ish), and L.A.’s finest Hooker (upper)?

When Olivia’s small town is wracked by its first murder, she never could have imagined her one night stand would reappear in the form of the GBI’s lead investigator. Years later, a man who resembles a boy she once knew reappears in her life. A boy she had loved with her whole being. A boy who had eviscerated her heart.
Though much time has passed, Tate and Miller still feel that same “pull” they did years ago. When truths about the past are revealed, will they both be able to move on from their painful past … or are they destined for heartbreak again?

Wingman rule number two: never reveal how much you want them.
Lex hates Gabi. Gabi hates Lex. But, hey, at least the hate is mutual, right? All Lex has to do is survive the next few weeks training Gabi in all the ways of Wingmen Inc. and then he can be done with her. But now that they have to work together, the sexual tension and fighting is off the charts. He isn’t sure if he wants to strangle her or throw her against the nearest sturdy table and have his way with her.
But Gabi has a secret, something she’s keeping from not just her best friend but her nemesis too. Lines are blurred as Lex becomes less the villain she’s always painted him to be…and starts turning into something more. Gabi has always hated the way she’s been just a little bit attracted to him—no computer-science major should have that nice of a body or look that good in glasses—but “Lex Luthor” is an evil womanizer. Then again, she’s always wanted a little danger.

Review

4.5-Stars

Loved this one. Romance, mystery, a second chance at love and treasure hunting what more could you ask for.

My Thoughts

Below the Surface is a sexy second-chance romance, with unique, fun twist. Dylan and Dani broke up five years ago when he left the island to move up north leaving her behind. Each blames the other for the break, but It was not easy for either of them. 5 years later they are brought back together in search of the sunken ship that brought them together in the first place and potential treasure it holds. Tensions are running high as they search the sea for the lost ship and the chemistry between  Dylan and Dani becomes harder and harder to deny.

From the first time we see Dylan and Dani together you can’t help wanting them to kiss and make up already! As a story that potentially held a lot of angst and drama in their relationship I greatly appreciated how well the author navigated their relationship and there wasn’t any unnecessary drama, which is a major bonus for me. The mature way that they handled the relationship once they started actually talking and not sulking around was so refreshing and wonderful. It felt so real and that made it even more special. I loved that the thing that brought them together in the first place also helped bring them back to each other.

I knew from the moment that I picked this book up that this one was gonna be special, and I am happy to say that I was not wrong. This book had some unofficial main characters as well and their story was just as beautiful and compelling as Dani and Dylan’s. The Starry Night, Francesca, and William had major roles and through their story the team was able to gleam the information to find the lost ship. The history, the intrigue and the incredible and heartbreaking love story added so much to this book, I can’t even put it into words. I highly recommend this book to everyone. It is low on drama and angst, high on adventure and intrigue and a whole lot of fun to read.

Notable Quotes

As his hands swept sand away to reveal the broken wood and decaying wood below, I watched in awe. He was so meticulous with his movements. I was more inclined to wave my hands frantically to unearth what was below, he took his time. He made each movement with deliberation. I could have watched him all day. He was sexy when he was working the deck of the boat, or gripping the steering wheel with his commanding presence, but down here, in my world, it was even better. It was my two favorite things combined. The fluid hug of ocean and seeing the man I loved hard at work. I would have kept drooling into my mask, had he not motioned for me to swim over to him.

As much as the possibility of getting hurt scares me, the possibility of not being with you hurts even more.

I’d found lots of things underwater, but none of them were ever worth much. Hurricane ravaged and owner error sunken fishing boats were the main hauls of our operation. Finding Dani was like finding the entire contents of the ocean floor in one well-kept, long, lean, and sexy package.

I wanted to find that ship more than ever . For her. And for me. The idea of putting down a marker on a map for this wreck was going to be the closure I didn’t even realize I needed. It would solidify that I was good at my job. It would put an end to any of the doubt I had about being able to do this. That and it would also be the final chapter of my story with Daniella Alvarez.

I never felt more alive than I did diving a wreck. This is what I wanted to do with my life. This is where I was meant to be. It’s too back mermaid wasn’t a job possibility. I would have rocked a seashell bikini top. The only thing that would have stopped me from signing up immediately was the man I knew was waiting for me on the surface. Could I, would I, be able to give up warm air and clear waters of The Keys for a life in the frigid north east?

About the Author

Born and raised in the middle of a Midwestern cornfield (not literally, that would be weird), I’ve spent my entire life imagining stories. Stories where the right guy always gets the right girl, first kisses are as magical as they are on the big screen and anything is completely possible if you believe.

Although this journey began years ago, it recently took on a whole new life. After years of devouring hundreds of Romance, YA and New Adult novels, I had an epiphany… I should write a book. And I did it!

If I’m not reading, writing, enjoying drinks with my amazing group of girlfriends or chasing around a sarcastically funny kid, I’m probably watching television shows that were created for teenagers, while my husband teases that I’m too old to watch them.

Daniella was always a dreamer. She’s always been chasing what would most deem unattainable—professionally and personally. Everything she’d ever wanted seemed to slip through her fingers the day he left, which is exactly why his return has her seeing red.

Can the two of them put their past aside long enough to figure out a mystery that has plagued them both for years? Can they work together to see what lies below the surface?

“Would you wait just a goddamn second,” I said when I finally caught up to her. She was halfway to the ocean and just about to sit down in the sand to pout. Just like her. Things get a little heated and she’s running for the water to avoid an actual conversation.

“Why? So you can tell me how I’m wasting my time on ghosts. How I just chase every lead I get without thinking things through?” A part of me wanted to put my hand over her mouth and shut her up, but another part of me reasoned I could do the same with my lips. The urge to kiss her had my blood overheating. “Like I said before…We. Don’t. Need. You.”

“Oh you need me,” I said with a smirk.

“No I don’t,” she quickly replied. “You left and I’ve been doing just fine.”

“I’m not talking about you in particular, Miss Impulsive.”

“Oh.” She paused for a second but quickly recovered. “I know you’re not talking about me.”

“I’m talking about that fact that I have the boat,” I pointed out. “I have the equipment you need to bring this so called ship up out of the water.”

“Whatever. I can find a boat anywhere.” She crossed her arms across her chest and glared.

“Oh yeah. That right? ‘Cause from what I’ve heard, the only boat you’ve been on lately comes equipped with a snorkel and tourists.”

“Keeping tabs on me, McKendrie?” The edge in her tone was sharp enough to raise the hairs on my arms. I might have occasionally asked Cal about her, but I wasn’t going to fess up at that moment. “Can’t imagine that you could even be bothered to check on what you left behind.” Her words stung just as badly as I expected them to.

“I shouldn’t.” I was still pissed too. If she wanted to play who can be the bigger asshole, I was going to win. I was part Irish and there wasn’t a chance in hell that I was going to let her get the better of me. She wasn’t the only one with a fiery temper. “Not a damn thing has changed.”

“You’re an asshole.”

“I’ve been called worse.” I took a step toward her. “Probably by you.”

“I can guarantee that,” she said between gritted teeth. The ever present noise of the ocean, the sound of traffic and the island town vanished as we held each other’s stare.

The two of us stood inches from each other on that beach. The tide rolled in over our feet and I was so mad that I didn’t even care that my best pair of boots were wet. The sand and surf were bearing witness to a good old fashion showdown. I could practically see the steam rolling off of her as I tightened my gaze.

Her lips were parted, words threatening to tear into me, but neither of us spoke. Instead, we just waited for the other to break.

Excerpt

“I don’t know, Hoyt,” I replied, matching the asshole-ish tone he’d just used on me. “Maybe because I like taking the turns high. I feel more in control on the top.”

The second I said it, I imagined myself taking control of the wound-tight man sitting in front of me. His eyes widened as if he were picturing something similar to the sexy scenario playing out in my head. I wanted to step over to the chair he was sitting in and slip onto his lap. I’d take those glasses he wore when we were watching films and toss them across the room. Or, maybe I’d leave them on. I wanted to make sure he saw exactly how capable I was. Sure, Hoyt was attractive in that thinks-he-knows-what’s-best-for-you kind of way, but I honestly hadn’t thought much about it as of late. Now though, all I wanted to do was find out what it would be like to catch him off guard. I wanted to wrap my arms around his neck and shut him up with my tongue. I wanted to show him that I was capable of many things, on and off the track. “Is that really that big of a damn deal?” I asked, letting my eyes narrow in on his.

“You’re impossible,” he said, abruptly standing. “Why am I even here if you aren’t even going to try and make this work? You want to go ride your new bike… go,” he snapped, nodding his head toward the door. “I’m over it.”

This is exactly what happens when I try to do right. I’d been a model riding student. Working out all the time. Watching everything he turned on in front of me. Riding the track the way he wanted me to. Not to mention… no drinking. No bad food. No sex. That was where I went wrong. I’d given up all my vices at once, trying to prove that I wanted this sponsorship and now I was standing there contemplating jumping the one guy that seemed pissed off at me daily. I needed to get out of this place, get a drink, and get laid. In that order.

He was over it? Well that made two of us. He’d just forced me to watch a video with my father in it and stirred up a bunch of shit I’d buried long ago. Not to mention, all I wanted to do was get on my dirt bike and he was hell-bent on keeping me from it.

“I’m not sure exactly what has your panties in such a twist today,” I bit out, standing up to face him. “All I’ve done is exactly what you’ve told me to. The past week I’ve been on time, I’ve done every workout, I’ve watched every film. Even the ones of my deadbeat dad, thank you very fucking much for that, by the way. All I asked was how much longer you planned on making me watch other people ride when that’s exactly what I should be doing. Riding.”

I could see the remorse in his eyes but his stubborn stance remained. “Oh, you’re a coach now?”

“I don’t know. Are you?” I couldn’t stop the words if I’d wanted to. This guy had been pushing my buttons and I’d had enough. I felt my nails bite into my skin as my hands balled into fists at my side. “You helped your brother. Big deal. You’ve got about as much experience coaching as I do.”

He shook his head and huffed out a breath.

“If I was coaching a rider, I sure as shit wouldn’t expect the person I was hired to help to sit on her ass all afternoon and waste daylight. The whole point of a riding coach is to be a coach while riding. Why that’s such a hard concept for you to understand, I’m not sure.”

“Oh I understand the concept, sweetheart,” he assured me, pushing the chair that was separating us to the side. I felt my chest heave with the effort of taking in oxygen when he stepped toward me. His eyes looked like laser beams about to cut completely through me. “The problem is, the second you fire up your bike, you stop listening. You stop paying attention to the words that are coming out of my mouth. At least in here, sitting on your ass, you’re paying attention.” He reached up and tapped my forehead with his finger. “If you could get your brain to stop pretending that it knows everything then maybe I’d be more inclined to let you ride.”

I fought back a laugh. A laugh that was brought on by the fact that I was so utterly pissed at him that my only option was to laugh, cry, or punch him in the face. I never pretended to know it all. I never even pretended to know half of it.

“Well, maybe if you’d get this,” I reached up between us and tapped my finger against his forehead the same way he’d done to me. “Out of your ass and actually acted like a coach instead of a drill instructor, I’d be more inclined to listen.”

He didn’t move. He didn’t even flinch. He stood there with his jaw clenched and his eyes still locked on mine. I’d expected him to say something. To argue that I was wrong. Hell, a tiny little part of me actually even thought he might apologize. Instead, he did nothing.

Glaring and breathing—that was all we were both capable of at that particular moment.

Review

4 Stars

Quick fun read with some great tension. Two people fighting their feelings to save their careers, struggling to find balance and figure out that some people are more important than dreams.

My Thoughts

I really enjoyed Chayse in this book. She was a awesome heroine that also kicked ass in the male dominated sport of motocross. I loved that she was able to take no crap, but also had a softer side that she was reluctant to show. And Hoyt, oh Hoyt. He was such an ass sometimes, but man was he a big softy once you got past that gruff all business exterior. It was fun to see these two struggle with their relationship both professional and personal and fight their attraction to each other. This is the third in the series and can be read as a standalone, but as I was reading I really wanted the other couple’s stories, so I will go back and read those too. Overall I really liked the world and characters that Elizabeth Lee created and can’t wait to explore it further in Throttled and Whipped.
