3.5 Stars

This book was beautiful and heartbreaking and romantic and emotional all at the same time. It was also tough read, but well worth reading. These two beautifully broken and flawed souls finding each other and working to make each other whole again.

My Thoughts

Cecy knows how to tackle difficult or uncomfortable subject matters and even though they can be hard to read, her characters always come out the other side stronger and better for having gone through them. I knew Finn’s story was going to be a rough one and she didn’t disappoint. I also knew it would be a beautiful one; one full of hope and promise and I was not disappointed.

Finn O’Brien is at the top of his MMA game, when his demons start to become more than he can take. He gets sent to therapy to deal with his issues. He runs into Sol while in therapy. Sol and Finn have known each other since they were little kids, but they don’t exactly know each other at all, in fact at times it felt like nobody really knew either of them.

Sol is struggling to cope with her mother’s mental illness and seems to be struggling the most with allowing others the opportunity to help. I got the fact that she wanted to be the one that could help her mum but shouldering all the responsibility herself was not the healthiest way to handle the situation.

A story full of ups, downs, good days and bad along with everything in between. It was a beautiful story about second chances, love, redemption and letting things you can’t control go in order to move on. It is definitely a story you do not want to miss. Highly recommended if you like your bad boy fighter with a tender side and a whole brood of demons to slay.

Excerpt

I lean against the tile with my arms spread, allowing the water to beat against my back. It’s too hot. I should turn it down, but I don’t bother. Eventually, like everything else, the sensation fades.

I’m not sure how long I’m in that position. A few seconds? A few minutes? But then Easton and his trainer Yefim are suddenly there. “You got lucky, O’Brien,” Yefim calls out, taunting me with his thick eastern European accent.

Shit. Like all the trash talk before the fight wasn’t enough.

“Did you hear me, you pussy?” he fires back when I don’t answer. “Did you hear me, you goddamn coward?”

Coward? Fuck you. It’s what I think, but not what I say, focusing instead on the streams of water that gather along my feet before they swirl into the drain.

It doesn’t help. The rage that’s building, the one I only manage to barely keep in? It stirs in my gut like a heavy pot filled with hate, sin, and all the curses my Ma would still beat my ass for saying.

“What’re you doing?” Yefim asks.

His voice is closer, he’s drawing near. I doesn’t matter that I’m standing here naked. He wants to be next to me. I shudder, that feeling I keep buried drilling its way up.

“I know about you,” Yefim says, not bothering to keep his voice low. “But everyone knows, don’t they? Even if you don’t want them to.”

My body shakes a little more, but it’s not from the cooling water. It’s from his words and all that anger they trigger. Don’t do it. Don’t go there.

“You like to keep it a secret. Don’t you, pussy?”

Yefim laughs when I keep my trap shut. He thinks I’m backing down, just like Easton did before his face met the mat. “He’s crying,” he calls out to Easton. “What? Not so tough now?”

That’s where he’s dead wrong. Every muscle I’ve conditioned serves a purpose―to take down those who fuck with me. And right now, Yefim is seriously fucking with me.

“You like to pretend that it’s girls you like, don’t you?” he says. “But that’s not true, is it? Oh, no, that’s not true at all . . .”

I raise my chin, knowing that someone’s not leaving without bleeding, and I’ve bled enough tonight.

Yefim kicks at my calf. “What? Nothing to say? Can’t speak without your boyfriend here?”

“Boyfriend?” Easton asks, laughing. “No fucking way.”

“Yes. Way,” Yefim insists. “Didn’t you know this little pussy takes it up the ass―”

I punch him so hard, I feel his teeth crack against my knuckles. For someone with decades of boxing experience he never saw me coming. But I see Easton flying at me out of the corner of my eye. I toss him over my shoulder, slamming him hard onto the ceramic tile floor. Like in the octagon, I throw myself on top of him, my fists colliding against his skin.

Voices rush forward, telling me to stop. A woman screams, but I don’t stop fighting off the bodies trying to grab me, breaking through the arms wrenching me back. I need to hit him―I need to feel my fists meeting his face―I need to feel something.

God damn it. I need to feel alive.

I don’t want the pain.

I don’t want the terror.

But once more, it’s all I feel.

Once Kissed by Cecy Robson – REVIEW

Once Kissed by Cecy Robson

Synopsis

Tough-as-steel cop Curran O’Brien is quickly rising through the ranks of the Philadelphia police department. But when his rookie partner is almost killed under his watch, Curran just wants to prove he still has what it takes to walk among Philly’s finest. So he’s pissed to be stuck on a cushy security assignment for the DA’s office . . . until he gets a good look at the sweet, straight-laced intern he’s supposed to protect—but not touch.

Tess Newart recognizes Curran instantly. How could she not? Back in college she tied this former frat boy to the bed with her argyle socks! That sizzling one-night stand was the only indiscretion Tess ever allowed herself. She has survived law school so far, despite being pushed to succeed by her overbearing father. Now that she’s interning on a major case against a ruthless crime boss, she won’t jeopardize her career by giving in to temptation again. She just never expected temptation to look so damn hot in uniform.

Tess knows her father has other plans for her, and they don’t include Curran. But soon she’s falling for him all over again. And when danger emerges, Curran will prove just how good a bad-boy cop can be.

My Review

4 Stars

This story had action, suspense, fun banter, hot sexy times and a drool worthy hot cop. All of these things made it an entertaining read that I would recommend. I was hooked from the argyle socks.

My Thoughts

To be honest Curran O’Brien is the main reason why i liked this book. I liked Contessa ok, but she was such a contradiction that I could not make sense of. When she was among other people she appeared shy, reserved and non-confident, but when she was with Curran and his family she was a completely different person. The flipping between personalities gave me a bit of whiplash at times.

I also could not understand why she would take all that crap from her father. I like my heroines where I can relate to them as a strong woman that doesn’t take any shit or like to be controlled and/or forced into doing things. I really liked her when she was herself around Curran though so she was redeemed then, but so frustrating.

Each character had their own demons to move past, but once they started to address and work through them the story really started to move. I loved these two and their hot, hot, hot sexy times and it made for a really fun and sexy read. One thing that bothered me is that they kept alluding to their first night together and I was really hoping through out the book there would be a flashback or recreation of that night, but there was nothing. In the end I really enjoyed reading this book and am looking forward to Declan’s story and the seeing the rest of the O’Brien clan.

Notable Quotes

“You…cad.”
“What?”
“I said you’re a cad!”
“I heard what you said. I’ve just never heard anyone aside from Bugs Bunny use that word. You gonna call me scoundrel next?”

You didn’t gain weight. You gained curves. Men, real men, like curves, not effing angles.

This is the same man I tied to bed with my argyle socks!

“Women love me,” he says in the same way I ask for the time. “Do they?”
“They do. I get dates. All the time. You know why?”
“They think you have money, and want you to be their sugar daddy.”
“No. I—”
“They lost a bet.”
“No.”
“They prefer men with small dicks.”
