30 Day Workout Challenge – Update

So it is official, I have a torn meniscus. I had surgery on it today, and hope to make a speedy recovery. I plan to incorporate my hour a day into my recovery. I’ll keep updating as I recover.

I had an MRI today to see how bad my knee is. At this point the doctor is thinking surgery. I find out on Monday if I have to get surgery for a torn Meniscus.

So its been about a week since I hurt my knee and it has not gotten any better. If anything it has gotten worse, so I am finally going to go to the doctor and see about it this afternoon. Hopefully it will be good news and not another surgery…

30 Day Workout Challenge – Day 4 and 5

So day 4 I hurt my knee again about a quarter of the way into my hour. Keeping ice on it and trying to stay off of it for a few days to see if that will help. Unfortunately that means the challenge is on hold until I can be up on my leg again. So for now my view is alot of this:

30 Day Workout Challenge – Day 3

It rained last night finally, so today it was too wet to go back to Castlewood State Park. We decided to do a paved path much closer to the house today, since the ground was still so wet. It is a series of parks connected by a trail that runs along the Meremac River in Valley Park. We start at a lot just off the main road and then walked a little over 3 miles total. This path is not a loop and much more linear, so we walked 30 minutes on way then turned around and walked back to the car.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

We walked for a total of 1 hr and 3 minutes and a total of around 2.5 miles. (the GPS was not working very well here so the distance might be off a bit) You can see the activity and map as well as a picture from a point on the trail :

Today we took the dog to Castlewood State Park. We hiked two different trails today and followed the river most of the morning. We had to get an early start because it is supposed to get up to 105 here today. When we got there around 8 it was already in the mid 80s, so we stuck to the easier, more shady trails today, for us and the puppy.

We walked a total of 3.38 miles today in about 1:15 minutes or so. We had to stop a few times to give the dog some water. Overall it was a much more fun activity today that the treadmill. You can see a general map of our path and the elevation changes on the Runkeeper link below.

30 Day Workout Challenge – Day 1

I started with a warm up walking the dog outside for about 15 min.

Then I did 5.07 miles on the stationary bike with an average speed of 13 mph. I rode for 23 minutes.

On the treadmill I did 1.5 miles at a pace of 24 minutes per mile. I walked for 37 minutes.

I took the dog for another walk around the neighborhood for about 30 minutes.

I am also watching my calorie intake with a goal of 1,185 calories or less each day.

30 Day Workout Challenge

I have wanted to do this challenge for a while now.  The challenge was started on Twitter by Kristen Bell. At the end of May she tweeted the idea of 30 work out classes in 30 days, then it grew in to 60 minutes a day doing anything that gets your heart rate up.

The point is that a whole bunch of people are doing it together and can share the successes and challenges with each other. Anyone can start at anytime and have tons of support. Kristen regularly has tweet exchanges with other “30 day homies” and posts her insights and complaints.

I have always wanted to do a “30 in 30”. I once did 30 blogs in 30 days, but there was wiggle room as I could cheat and blog about blogging or post something super old and pretend it was new. I see people around me doing thirty days of yoga and thirty days of juicing but I haven’t done either because I’m afraid I would fail. It’s a problem I have, not doing things I think I could fail doing. Another problem is that I tend to be pretty hard on myself if I’m not perfect. It’s a bad combination. I’ve been trying to jump into things I wouldn’t normally just jump into lately and I like it. I’ve learned things about myself. I’ve learned that it feels good to see things through regardless of how they work out. At the genesis of this discovery I was on Twitter when I saw a tweet from a friend that hash tagged “30 day homies”. I clicked it to find all of these people tweeting back and forth about their successes and challenges with doing thirty work outs in thirty days. It was a great feeling to see all of these folks coming together. A backward search took me to the source, one Kristen Bell.

It all feels very “real”, though I hate this use of the word, and I think it’s really inspiring. From what I’ve just learned about her I like her in a “wow, I wish we were friends” kind of way. She comes off publicly as the girl next door – or rather, the girl you wish lived next door. The best part? I have it on good authority that she actually is like that. Clearly, she’s a unicorn.

Okay, so she’s not actually a unicorn. She’s an actress. Depending on your generation, and level of cult-show appreciation, you know her as either Veronica Mars or Sarah Marshall in Forgetting Sarah Marshall, or both. She’s also the voice of gossip girl on the show of the same name, which might be the most exciting bit for me. (I’m kidding).

Kristen Bell was has an impressive resume. She went to NYU Tisch School of the Arts and left before graduating only because she’d been offered a role on Broadway in The Adventures of Tom Sawyer. Hello! Broadway! She’s worked hard for everything she’s got and is not one to rest on her laurels. A quote from a 2009 interview she did with Cosmo is one of the best I’ve read – ever. “I’m very proactive with my career and when I heard aboutGossip Girl, I called someone at the network and asked if I could do something on it. At that time, I didn’t have a job, and I’m not some idiot who just wants to hang out in LA — I want to work.” I suspect we could all learn from that kind of focus.

As if it couldn’t get better, the woman is also an animal rights activist. Having been a vegetarian since she was eleven, she made the transition to veganism this year. The way she saw it, there was no difference between the family dog and the cow on her plate. Transitioning to a fully plant based diet, while a natural extension of her beliefs, was also a no brainer for her after watching the film Forks Over Knives. The health benefits persuaded her to make the change. She takes care of herself.

Kristen Bell is fully committed, both to life and her career. She has that balance that we all strive for and a healthy sense of self. For all those reasons she is She-ro of the Week. Well, those and who doesn’t love that sloth video?

These two helped to inspire me to start the challenge and try to complete 30 days in a row with some kind of activity that keeps my heart rate up for 60 minutes each day. I usually walk the dog two times every day, but since we are in the 9th straight day of 100 plus temperatures, I have had to move indoors and adjust my activities. I have found that it is actually easier to keep track of calories burned and total time when you are using equipment and not worrying about what the dog is doing. So now that I can do a consecutive 60 minutes I am officially starting this challenge.
