Steal Me by Lauren Layne – REVIEW

Steal Me

Being a cop might be in Anthony Moretti’s blood, but protecting and serving the city of New York has always been more than just the family business. If that means his love life stays locked up, well then that’s just another sacrifice made in the line of duty. That is, until he sets eyes on the gorgeous new waitress at The Darby Diner and suddenly Anthony’s morning coffee is leaving him a whole lot more hot and bothered than usual.

Though waitressing at The Darby isn’t exactly Maggie Walker’s dream job, it pays the bills and gives her time to work on her novel. Now if only she could stop fantasizing about gorgeous Anthony Moretti every time he sits down at her table, she’d really be in great shape. But when he needs her help identifying a criminal threatening The Darby—and Maggie recognizes her ex-husband—she fears her fresh start might be a pipe dream. Faster than a New York minute, Maggie and Anthony find themselves in one perilous pursuit that only gets hotter with each and every rule-breaking kiss.

4 Stars

This was a sexy, sweet slow burn all the way through. Anthony Moretti will steal your hearts and drive you crazy at the same time. This was a fun book full of romance, smoldering sexual tension and suspense.

My Thoughts

For thirty-six year old Captain Anthony Moretti, there are three important things that he valued in his life. His family, the NYPD, and the Yankees. His love life has always been on the back burner and now that he made Captain even more so. He is seeing his dreams come true, and has resigned himself to a lonely existence.

Maggie Walker didn’t plan to be a waitress as a career but after divorcing her ex-husband, she always felt the need to help support her alcoholic father and dependent brother. She has always put her family before herself leaving Maggie with not much. Maggie dreams of becoming an author and hopes of getting her young adults genre stories published. This doesn’t leave much time for her love life in the monotonous routine of everyday.

This all changes when she gets pulled in to Moretti’s world as a informant on a big case he is working on. This forces the two into a tense relationship of duty vs desire, with the sexual tension ratcheting the stakes ever higher. As the two spend more time together their explosive sexual tension erupts blurring the lines for both. Is Anth just using her for the case? Can she really deal with the realities of his job?

The way that they both overcame their past tragedies to become stronger people for themselves and ultimately each other was one of my favorite parts of this book. There were so many touches of the humor we have come to expect from a Lauren Layne book and all of the intense sexual tension that we love. All in all it was a very good book that I would recommend to anyone that likes a little suspense with their romance.

Notable Quotes

His eyes were wild as they looked down on her, and the last thought Maggie had before his mouth slammed against hers was that Anthony Moretti completely out of control was the sexiest thing she’d ever seen.

He pulled back, just slightly, his breath hot and heavy against her face. “Say you want this.”

“Maggie,” he whispered, just as her eyes started to close.
He was silent for a long moment. Then, “Nothing. Go to sleep.”
So she did. But in her dreams, he finished that sentence with something else entirely.

Has anyone ever told you that you go from docile and abiding to sassy and difficult in the span of a couple seconds?

You go from sexy to bossy so fast I get whiplash.”
“Rumor has it some woman find bossy sexy.
