Spam

25 Jul

After my post on Hot Hawaiian Burgers I wanted to know a little more about Spam, like is short for anything or when it was invented. I found out that Spam was first introduced in 1937 and the name was created by combining Spiced and Ham. Well from there I wanted to know why unwanted email, or calls were referred to as Spam too.

From Wikipedia :

Spam is the use of electronic messaging systems to send unsolicited bulk messages indiscriminately. While the most widely recognized form of spam is e-mail spam, the term is applied to similar abuses in other media: instant messaging spamUsenet newsgroup spam,Web search engine spamspam in blogswiki spamonline classified ads spam, mobile phone messaging spamInternet forum spam, junk fax transmissionssocial networking spam, television advertising and file sharing network spam.

It is named for Spam, a luncheon meat, by way of a Monty Python sketch in which Spam is included in almost every dish.

Really it is adapted from Monty Python??? So i tracked down the clip. Enjoy.

Cougar Town – Jules’ (slightly longer) morning routine song

21 Feb

Lyrics:

I’m not predictable you say
Perhaps it’s true
But when you wake
Here’s what you’ll do:

Brush your teeth
Wash your face
Check your nose
Just in case
Eat your breakfast
Bacon and eggers
Take your pill
So you won’t get preggers
Find your mouthguard
Check your mail
Workout time
If it’s late you bail
Where’s your mouthguard
You threw it away
It’s all the same
Everyday
But we don’t mind
We’re glad to wait
‘Cause we all know
That right at eight
You come downstairs
And on our knees
All together:
Coffee please!

It’s Jule’s slightly longer morning routine song! Yeah! :)

Guy Fieri’s Tequila Turkey Fettuccine

31 Jan

My mom saw this on Rachel Ray and asked me to track it down for her. It was on her website for the show on January 20, 2012. I love Guy Fieri’s food and personality and style, so it was no surprise to me that I would find this recipe interesting. Check out more of Rachel Ray at http://www.rachaelrayshow.com/food/ and Guy Fieri at http://www.guyfieri.com/food.html

Guy Fieri’s Tequila Turkey Fettuccine

This is the dish that helped bring home the Next Food Network Star title. Think about fettuccine alfredo in Mexico during Thanksgiving…. “Tequila!”

Ingredients

  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1/4 cup 1/8-inch strips of red onion
  • 3 teaspoons minced jalapeño
  • 5 ounces cooked turkey breast, sliced into 1/2-inch pieces
  • 1/4 cup roasted red bell pepper strips
  • 1 tablespoon minced garlic
  • 9 ounces fettuccine
  • 1 ounce white or silver tequila
  • 1/2 cup heavy cream
  • 1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice
  • 1 tablespoon chopped cilantro, plus 2 sprigs for garnish
  • 1/4 teaspoon fine sea salt
  • 2 tablespoons grated parmesan cheese
  • 2 tablespoons seeded and diced Roma tomato (about 1/2 tomato)
  • Freshly cracked black pepper
  • 2 lime wedges

Preparation

Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil.

In a large skillet over high heat, heat the olive oil. Add the onion and jalapeño, and cook until the onion is translucent, about 3 minutes. Add the turkey and roasted red pepper, and mix lightly, taking care not to break up the turkey too much. Add the garlic and cook for 2 minutes.

Cook the fettuccine al dente, according to the package directions. Drain.

Pour the tequila around the edge of the pan to deglaze it. Add the cream and let reduce to 2 to 4 minutes. Add the lemon juice, cilantro and salt, and stir to combine. Add the fettuccine and toss, then add the Parmesan and toss again.

Nest the pasta on a serving plate. Garnish the pasta with sprigs of cilantro and a sprinkle of tomato and freshly cracked black pepper. Serve with lime wedges.

Song of the Day “Thriller/Heads Will Roll” Glee Cast

22 Jan

I usually don’t choose Glee songs to be the song of the day, but I love this mash up. It is one of my favorites from the show. I have included the originals and a bonus cover as well. So turn it up and enjoy.

Scene from Glee Thriller/Heads Will Roll Mash Up

Michael Jackson Original Thriller

*** Bonus Cover Imogen Heap Thriller Cover

Yeah Yeah Yeahs Heads Will Roll

Lyrics: (Thriller)

1st verse
It’s close to midnight and something evil’s lurking in the dark
Under the moonlight you see a sight that almost stops your heart
You try to scream but terror takes the sound before you make it
You start to freeze as horror looks you right between the eyes,
You’re paralyzed
Chorus
’cause this is thriller, thriller night
And no one’s gonna save you from the beast about strike
You know it’s thriller, thriller night
You’re fighting for your life inside a killer, thriller tonight

2nd verse
You hear the door slam and realize there’s nowhere left to run
You feel the cold hand and wonder if you’ll ever see the sun
You close your eyes and hope that this is just imagination
But all the while you hear the creature creepin’ up behind
You’re out of time

Chorus
’cause this is thriller, thriller night
There ain’t no second chance against the thing with forty eyes
You know it’s thriller, thriller night
You’re fighting for your life inside of killer, thriller tonight

Bridge
Night creatures call
And the dead start to walk in their masquerade
There’s no escapin’ the jaws of the alien this time
(they’re open wide)
This is the end of your life

3rd verse
They’re out to get you, there’s demons closing in on every side
They will possess you unless you change the number on your dial
Now is the time for you and i to cuddle close together
All thru the night i’ll save you from the terror on the screen,
I’ll make you see
Chorus
That this is thriller, thriller night
’cause i can thrill you more than any ghost would dare to try
Girl, this is thriller, thriller night
So let me hold you tight and share a killer, diller, chiller
Thriller here tonight

(rap performed by vincent price)
Darkness falls across the land
The midnight hour is close at hand
Creatures crawl in search of blood
To terrorize y’awl’s neighborhood
And whosoever shall be found
Without the soul for getting down
Must stand and face the hounds of hell
And rot inside a corpse’s shell
The foulest stench is in the air
The funk of forty thousand years
And grizzy ghouls from every tomb
Are closing in to seal your doom
And though you fight to stay alive
Your body starts to shiver
For no mere mortal can resist
The evil of the thriller

Lyrics: (Heads Will Roll)

Off with your head
Dance until you’re dead
Heads will roll
Heads will roll
Heads will roll
Heads will roll
On the floor

Glitter on the wet streets
Silver over everything
The river’s all wet
You’re all cold

Dripping with alchemy
Shiver stop shivering
The glitter’s all wet
You’re all chrome

The men cry out
The Girls cry out
The men cry out
Oh no

Off with your head
Dance until you’re dead
Heads will roll
Heads will roll
Heads will roll
Heads will roll
On the floor

Looking glass
Take the past
Shut your eyes
You realize

Glitter on the wet streets
Silver over everything
The glitter’s all wet
You’re all chrome
You’re all chrome

Off with your head
Dance until you’re dead
Off with your head
Dance until you’re dead
Off with your head
Dance until you’re dead

Song of the Day “Bad Karma” Ida Maria

16 Jan

This song is in the trailer for one of my favorite shows, Being Human. It has been getting suck in my head for about 3 months every time I see an ad and the show finally returns tonight. Check out the show and turn up the song and enjoy.

Being Human Season 2 Trailer

Lyrics:

You better believe in karma
baby it’s gonna sting
the wheel of life’s gonna do you in
so I don’t really have to do a thing
you took me outta my money
you messed up my love life and my career
you better believe in karma
guess it’s gonna start getting weird right here

chorus

bad karma (oh, yeah)
baby that’s what you got
bad karma (oh, yeah)
whether you believe it or not
the universe is gonna getcha
you’ll be scratchin’ the seven year itch
you know what I think?
bad karma’s a Bitch

You better believe in Jesus
’cause only he can save ya now
throw in a saint or two why don’t ya
three hail mary’s and a hari krishna
you made me drink the kool-aid
you tricked me into thinkin’ that Jill means Jack
you are the fire spawn of the Devil
but even he ain’t takin’ you back, back, back

Chorus

bad karma (oh, yeah)
baby that’s what you got
bad karma (oh, yeah)

whether you believe it or not
the universe is gonna getcha
you’ll be scratchin’ the seven year itch
that’s just my opinion
Damn! Bad karma’s a Bitch

You better believe in karma
just look at the sorry shape you’re in
there’s a doll with your name and your gloomy face
and the department up doing a rush on your case
You better believe in voodoo babe
I got a long list of your sins
There’s a word you may have heard of called payback
and i’m runnin’ out of pins

chorus

bad karma (oh, yeah)
baby that’s what you got
bad karma (oh, yeah)
whether you believe it or not
the universe is gonna getcha
you’ll be scratchin’ the seven year itch
you know what I think?
Bad karma’s a Bitch
(ba la da da da da
ba la da da da da)
Bad karma’s a bitch
(ba la da da da da
ba la da da da da)

This video is amazing. You should probably watch the gang from Sesame Street doing Beastie Boys immediately.

Glee Best Songs of Season 2

18 Jun

One of my favorite sites Covermesongs.com have recapped Season 2 and picked their 10 favorite songs of the Season. Some I agree with, and some I don’t but here are their choices:

10. Singin’ in the Rain/Umbrella (Gene Kelly/Rihanna cover)
Glee loves their mash-ups, and usually I do too. Though earlier this year I ranked “Stop! In the Name of Love/Free Your Mind” above this one, I’ve come to appreciate this pairing a little more, thanks in no small part to the gigantic musical disparity between these two songs originally. That Glee can make them coexist at all means it’s worth noting.

9. Hot Patootie (from The Rocky Horror Picture Show)
Plot-wise, the Rocky Horror episode was a mess. Musically, there were some items of interest to be discovered. By far my favorite was this Meatloaf cover with lead vocals from John Stamos, who will forever be Uncle Jesse to me. For anyone who grew up watching Full House (I’m sorry), it surely was great fun to see the Rippers frontman cut loose here.

8. Landslide (Fleetwood Mac cover)
Gwyneth Paltrow provided Glee with its marquee guest star this season. I found a few of her performances outright terrible (see below) but I really enjoyed this one, which brought some sensitivity to the Santana/Brittany story and proved that Gwyneth really can sing like a human being.

7. Dreams (Fleetwood Mac cover)
Speaking of guest stars and Fleetwood Mac, how great was this duet between Will (Matthew Morrison) and April (Kristin Chenoweth)? Their voices just work so well together.

6. Hey Soul Sister (Train cover)
The Dalton Academy Warblers, McKinley’s a cappella rivals, had to be presented somewhere on this list. I waffled between “Soul Sister” and their rendition of Keane’s “Somewhere Only We Know,” but in the end I think the cleverness of this arrangement (courtesy of real-life a cappella group Tufts Beelzebubs) wins out.

5. Sing! (from A Chorus Line)
Originally my favorite song from the first half of the season, “Sing!” for me captures the thematic essence of Glee – it doesn’t matter how bad you sound, just rock out! Of course the entire cast is made up of accomplished singers touched up with Auto-Tune…except for Mike Chang (Harry Shum, Jr.). “Sing!” is the only thing approaching a lead vocal Shum, Jr.’s ever gotten, which makes it all the more enjoyable.

4. Don’t You Want Me (The Human League cover)
Glee does something pretty remarkable with this cover of a derided (unjustly, I think) ’80s song — they make it sound new. Between the club-style synthesizers and the sharp voices of Rachel (Lea Michele) and Blaine (Darren Criss), you’d swear this song was written this year.

3. I Want to Hold Your Hand (The Beatles cover)
When Glee needs to sell a sensitive number they turn to Kurt (Chris Colfer), and brother, it didn’t get much more sentimental than this sparse Beatles cover. “Grilled Cheesus” struck me as one of the most genuinely emotional episodes of the season, and it all hinges on this performance.

2. Never Going Back Again (Fleetwood Mac cover)
Why do I love this song so much? I don’t know, but man, Artie (Kevin McHale) kills it. I literally cannot think of a way this song could be better; it’s lovingly crafted and exquisitely delivered, not to mention that it’s featured in a fantastic segment.

1. Rolling in the Deep (Adele cover)
Though I’ve seen some pretty serious hate for it, I think Glee struck gold with this cover. The formula’s simple. Take a mega-popular song. Let your show’s biggest talent (Lea Michele) go nuts on it and bring in a fan-favorite guest star (Jonathan Groff) to compliment her abilities. That would’ve been enough to make viewers flip out, but then the show turned it a cappella seemingly for no real reason. I love that they’re willing to experiment like this, and I think the results speak for themselves. An instant classic, if Glee produces such things.

Now some of these choices I totally agree with, (such as “Rolling In The Deep”, “Do You Want Me”, “Landslide”, “Singing In The Rain/Umbrella”) but others just don’t get my vote for the “best” of the season. In a season where we saw Glee tackle indie songs, original songs, Britney, and Lady Gaga there are so many other great choices and vocals that I enjoyed so much better. I am judging these on the vocal performances and how many times I actually listened to the Glee version of the song. Some of these songs I didn’t like the original (“Friday” I’m talking about you) and the Glee version made me actually tolerate the song, and some were my favorite songs that the Glee cast fell flat on their versions (“Kiss” and “(I’ve Had) The Time of My Life”). So after many listens and much deliberation here are my top 10 songs from Glee Season 2.

10. Singin’ in the Rain/Umbrella (Gene Kelly/Rihanna cover)

I love Singin’ in the Rain more than words can say and I really loved the whole episode with Mr. Shue singing songs from the movie, but I was a little wary about this mashup. In general I love the Glee mashups, but there have been some that the songs are just too far away from each other to make it work, and I thought this was one of them. And then I heard the song and have not stopped playing it since. It really works and ties these two complete opposites together. That in itself cements this songs place in the top ten for me.

9. Songbird (Fleetwood Mac Cover)

I had never heard this song before Glee, because I have never really been a big Fleetwood Mac fan. The instant I heard this song I fell in love with it. From the meaning of it on the show to how lovely and full of meaning Naya Rivera’s voice sounds and even the arrangement. This song really earned it’s place in the top ten without any autotune or gimmicks or guest stars and for that I will always love it more.

8. Thriller/Heads Will Roll (Michael Jackson/Yeah Yeah Yeahs C0ver)

This was for the big showstopping after Superbowl episode. I really like this mashup because of the Yeah Yeah Yeahs inserted into such an iconic song. This is one of the rare Glee moments where the whole package plays such a large part of the song itself. The whole dance number really makes the song something special, well that and the fantastic vocals.

7. Teenage Dream (Katy Perry Cover)

The Warblers deserved to be recognized for their contributions to Season 2 and to me this is one of their greatest performances. The vocal arrangement on this song is to die for and the way Darren Criss took ownership of the performance and made me like a song that I normally would have ignored.

6. I’m Not Gonna Teach Your Boyfriend To Dance (Black Kids Cover)

I might be biased about this song, because I have loved it since I first heard it over 2 years ago, but I also loved everything about the Glee version. First the song was perfect to play at prom, second the vocals make this one that I want to turn up and listen to over and over again.

5. Landslide (Fleetwood Mac Cover)

Again with the Fleetwood Mac, but this version is so beautiful. I really enjoyed the way that all three voices melted together to make an already good song great. This song brought back Gwyneth, but it didn’t matter Santana and Britney really brought something special to the song. It also showed the raw talent of all three ladies.

4. Never Going Back Again (Fleetwood Mac Cover)

At first I couldn’t make up my mind about this song. It’s another Fleetwood Mac song that I had never heard, and it is about Artie and Britney breaking up, but even so the more that I listened to this song the more I loved it. The range and talent of Kevin McHale really shined through on this song and he really made me like a song that I would have never paid attention to.

3. Valerie ( Amy Winehouse Cover)

What can I say about this song but Naya Rivera is a beast. She really rocks this song and takes it to a different level. I liked this song from the first time I heard it in the regionals episode, and this should be rock solid proof why Naya got her record deal.

2. Don’t You Want Me (The Human League Cover)

This song has been a personal favorite for a few decades now, but what really propelled it to the top is the duo that perform it. I really loved the way that Lea Michele and Darren Criss play off of each other and make this song a lot more playful and energetic than some.

1. Rolling In The Deep (Adele Cover)

Glee really hit it out of the park with this cover. They played every card to a tee and created something special. First we have the super popular song of the moment, second giving Lea Michele free rein on the vocals, third a fan favorite guest and finally throw in an original arrangement. All of these combine to make a truly wonderful song.

I Feel Pretty/Unpretty (West Side Story/TLC Cover)

When I Get You Alone (Thicke Cover)

Fat Bottom Girls (Queen Cover)

Sing! (My Chemical Romance Cover)

Loser Like Me (Original)
